There are a range of fishing experiences available in Byron Bay, and along the North Coast of NSW. Byron Bay itself is partly protected by a marine park, which limits fishing activities to very specific areas. Fishing is not permitted at The Pass or along the popular surfing areas at Main Beach. However there are some sections of the marine park where fishing is permitted and it’s worth seeking out a local guide to help you find the best spots. Boat and land based fishing carters are available in Byron Bay.
Here are some of the red hot fishing adventures available to visitors!

Hinterland Freshwater Fishing Adventures

There are very few fishing tour operators offering freshwater fishing tours in the Byron Bay Hinterland. However that’s no reflection on the quality of fishing. The creeks and rivers of the hinterland offer amazing freshwater fishing opportunities.
These adventures typically involve catch and release fishing methods, targeting Australian Bass. Other species are present, including Eastern Cod in some streams, but these fish are totally protected and must be returned to the water.
Wilderness Adventures guides love fishing for bass in the hinterland, as well as cod further inland around Tenterfield. Their guides have decades of fishing and guiding experience. They know many creeks and rivers packed with fish just inland from Byron Bay that are rarely fished.
The summer bass fishing sessions can be legendary with 8, or more fish in a session being quite common. The best times to fish are early and late in the day and the guides are happy to fish both the morning and evening bite.
They offer both lure and fly fishing tours. Casting lessons are also available. See wildernessadventures.tours for more info.
