Places to surf at Byron Bay

The Pass is the place everyone talks about surfing in Byron Bay and who could blame them. This is an amazing surf break and well worth a visit. The water is often crystal clear and there is so much wildlife as it’s at the heart of the Byron Marine Park Sanctuary.

It’s not the only place worth surfing. It’s not uncommon to see nice waves in town near the wreck, or south of the light house at Tallow Beach or around Broken Head. Here is a link to a local surf guide from surf house backpackers.

If you’d like to get a surf report you should see swellnet or surfline which have cams and reports with the latest info, or just call one of the surf schools listed above.

Other Places To Surf

Byron Bay is not the only place to surf. There are some amazing beaches worth visiting in Ballina, Evans Head and on the Gold Coast.

When the surf gets really big on the beaches did you know the local rivers are sometimes a better place to surf. One of the best river waves is in Ballina well inside the mouth of Richmond River. When the surf pushes in the mouth of the river some really nice waves form in North Creek, as well as on the main river near Missingham Bridge. It’s a great spot for newbies to get on a board and try surfing for the first time. If the well is big from the east, then the river at Ballina could be pumping some long fun beginner waves. Kingscliff can also offer great waves in the creek depending on the sand build up.

Lennox Point is a famous surf break at the southern end of Seven Mile Beach. It’s very popular and much loved by locals. We recommend surfing with a local if you’re not familiar to the break, so you have a good introduction to the wave and the local surfers.
